High Ground Organics
Ripe Organic Strawberries
Watsonville is of course a prime growing area for strawberries. We've been growing strawberries at High Ground Organics for seven years now and are up to planting 3 acres of berries every year. Our favorite varieties are Seascape and Albion. We plant some of each, which helps even out the production through the season (Sometimes one variety goes into a lull, but the other keeps producing. The Seascapes tend to come in earlier, but the Albions are more consistent.) They are both delicious, sweet berries when picked ripe for direct market (that's you!) Every year we rotate our strawberry ground. From 2006 to 2008 we grew the berries on the 10 acres we lease at the Redman House. The past 2 years, we have them back at our home farm, so we can walk out our door into the strawberry patch. (The kids love this.) Here are some pictures of our strawberry patch this year and last.
You can get our strawberries through our CSA, or pick some up at our farmstand or at the Mountain View Farmers Market. We usually have berries from late March until the fall rains start.
