pear blossoms3You are invited to our Spring Farm Tour on Saturday, April 12th, at 10 AM, at our home farm. Come out and see where your food is being grown! We’ll take you around to the blueberry patch, as well as pear and apple orchards and the various row crops growing in the field. Special features on this property include our riparian corridor, native insectary hedgerows, the habitat restoration area, and the four-year UCSC research project on crop rotation that we are participating in.

Spring is a vibrant time on the farm after all this welcome rain, and we have a lovely location above Harkins Slough, with its abundant bird life. If you are interested in birds, please bring binoculars. We routinely see dozens of bird species both large and small. We will point out the osprey nest which is occupied for the 5th year in a row. There’s also a chance to spot bald eagles, which are now nesting in the slough system nearby. The barn and cliff swallows have migrated back after their winter in the south. White pelicans, herons, egrets, coots, ducks, geese, cormorants, kingfishers, and other birds are often to be seen on the slough itself, while hawks, harriers, and kites frequent the skies.

Of course, we will talk about our farming practices and answer any questions you have about how we grow your food, including seeding, fertilizing, weeding, harvesting, and so on. And Steve is always happy to talk about farm equipment for those of you who are mechanically inclined.

Children are welcome. Feel free to bring guests. Please wear close-toed shoes or boots that you don’t mind getting dirty, and long pants to fend off stinging nettle. We will start right at 10 am and expect to take about 2 hours.

Hope to see you here!
